great article/J.Bertrand was a legend when I started laser sailing in 1986 and the masters class and those to be coached by him are all lucky folks, and not having met the man, understand that he is just a super guy as well

An absolutely wonderful article. I love it when people persevere in the face of strong criticism to realize what they are certain can be done.
We sure do need more people to step in the footsteps (or rather the glide path) of the Wright Brothers and show the world what can be done.
Please keep up the good work and be sure I'll be checking back on you guys to see if you've broken any new records :-)

Here's one for you. I'm sure the King and the Wright Brothers would both agree.

Just to name names, the Rogue Wave in this part of the city is the Telegraph Hill Neighborhood associations (there are several different ones) which have proved themselves all too willing to file law suits to stop any kind of development along the bay that they don't approve of or they think will impact their views or quality of life (ie. traffic/noise etc. on the Embarcadero). Most recently, they have files suit against the plan for green space and other upgrades along the west side of the Embarcadero because it includes a condo development that would replace part of a parking lot and some tennis courts at the Golden Gate Swim and Tennis Club.

So, it really doesn't matter if all of the environmental groups/commissions/agencies are on board, because without the exemption ANYONE, but especially the Telegraph Hill folks, can sue to stop it if they don't like it. I wouldn't be surprised if the sued just to throw dirt in the eyes of Larry Ellison, who is even richer than they are.

Sad to say that this probably means that it will be in Italy or Spain.

Great summary of the issues, but there are quite a few brits who would take issue with characterization of the America's Cup as the oldest trophy in sports.
It seems they have some rowing race on the Thames which is quite a bit older, and perhaps some others, too.

Rather, it is the oldest trophy in INTERNATIONAL sports.

Great post Kimball, its good to see basic physics proven to the doubters via a well conducted experiment.

And by the way, the "Because it's there" statement you misquoted at the start of the article came from George Mallory, not Edmund Hillary.
